Sterling Silver Care

925 sterling silver is an alloy metal that will tarnish with time. The rate of tarnish is dependant on various factors such as humidity levels, contact with chemicals & body chemical composition. The good news is that it is irreversible & you can remove tarnish with a simple at-home method involving a dish, aluminium foil, baking soda, salt & hot water. Scroll to find out how!

After lots of research, this method is by far my favourite method for cleaning sterling silver jewellery because it is gentle even on textured finished and you can get into tight spaces between chain links without the need for scrubbing. 

To begin with, you will need the following :

- Hot water (2 cups)
- A heatproof dish (to hold your sterling silver pieces)
- Aluminium foil
- Baking soda (1/3 cup)
- Salt (1 tsp)

Line your heatproof dish with a piece of aluminum foil, shiny side up.
Please note that each time you repeat this process, you will need to use a new piece of aluminum foil.

Lay your sterling silver jewellery on top of the aluminum foil. Arrange the pieces such that they don't overlap and make as much contact as possible with the foil. 

Add the baking soda to the hot water and gently stir. Careful as it will bubble up. Then add in the salt and gently stir again.

Pour the mixture over your jewellery in the aluminium foil lined dish. Bubbles will form on the surface of your jewellery as the chemical reaction takes place. When the water cools to room temperature you can remove your jewellery and give it a good rinse.

Your jewellery is ready to wear and enjoy!

AVOID USING THIS METHOD ON:

Soft & porous gemstones, such as turquoise
Pieces with gems which may be glued in place (such as birthstones and pearls)
